Brief History
EIASC established EMDA as its development wing to alleviate economic and social problems prevailing in the country and to promote development activities. Since its establishment, the organization has been implementing multidimensional participatory and need based development programs in different parts of the country among different nations, nationalities and peoples, and made a significant contribution to the overall Social and economic development registered during the last two decades especially in improving the maternal and child health in remote pastoralist community of Afar and Somali, women empowerment ,poverty reduction, capacity building and environmental rejuvenation efforts of the country.

Strategic Goals
- To empower disadvantaged children, OVCs, adolescent and young girls to reach their potential through quality education.
- To improve the Maternal, child and Neonate health and overall wellbeing of the women and girls (target communities)through F/P and SRH programs
- To improve target households’ access to adequate food and nutrition to lead healthy and active life.
- To reduce the vulnerability of Orphans and Vulnerable children (OVCs) and improve their living conditions and overall wellbeing
- To protect the most needy
- Broadening opportunities for sustainable livelihoods for the poor and marginalized community
- Ensuring Food Security for the poor and marginalized community
- To build vulnerable households’ adaptation and recovery capacities to shocks and stress induced by climate change
- To Save lives and Protect Livelihoods of the people affected by humanitarian crises such as drought and/conflict
Organizational Structure
As the development arm of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, EMDA follows the structure of EIASC. The General Assembly of EMDA has 44 members elected from the Islamic Affairs Councils of the nine regional states and two city administrations. The General Assembly is the highest decision-making body of the organization and gives generic policy direction and implementation guidelines. The General Assembly listens to the report of the board of directors and examines its strengths and weaknesses in achieving the goal of EMDA.
EMDA has a board of management with representatives from the EIASC and professional from outside EIASC. The board provides overall strategic direction and guidance to the management team. It sets general policy guidelines on the implementation of different project activities. It also identifies key risk areas of the project and gives guidance.
EMDA is run by an executive director who is delegated by the board of directors. He guides the day-to-day activities of the organization. The executive director is responsible for the management of all the projects being undertaken. The executive director oversees financial management of the project, including approving expenditures within delegation and budget, and reports to the board updated information of the project and any concerns/issues on the implementation of the project.
The executive director works with the management committee which comprises of five members to decide on major administrative matters and manage major developments and guide its operations. The committee consists of EMDA’s Executive director, program director, planning monitoring and evaluation head, finance and administration department head and resource mobilization desk.
At the national office level, EMDA has Five Directorates; administration and finance, partnership and resource mobilization, planning, programs monitoring and evaluation, public relation and documentation as well as programs directorates. Under programs directorate, there are four departments focusing on various programs/ projects: access to basic services program, women and family affairs program, capacity development, livelihood promotion and food security program as well as climate change adaptation, disaster & risk reduction and displaced citizen’s rehabilitation program departments.
At present, EMDA has a total of 37 employees of which 25 are men and 12 are women.

Programs/ Thematic Project Areas
EMDA engages in both humanitarian relief and development activities. The humanitarian relief and aid are given during emergency and seasonal problems in the society. EMDA has been implementing various development projects in the target communities in the country.
The major development projects include
- HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support;
- Support of orphans and vulnerable children;
- Reproductive Health and Family planning;
- Eradication of Harmful beliefs, traditions and practices like FGM, etc.
- Provision of basic services like health, education food security.
EMDA’s five-year strategic plan (2019-2023) stated access to basic services program, women and family affairs program, capacity development, livelihood promotion and food security program as well as climate change adaptation, disaster & risk reduction and displaced citizens rehabilitation program as its core programs.
Geographic Focus Areas
EMDA operates in different parts of the country following the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council’s Structure stretched from Federal, regional, Zonal and woreda level.
Previously EMDA has been implementing
- Youth and adolescent reproductive Health (AYRH) Project in collaboration with Lucile Packard foundation at Jimma and West Showa (Ambo) Zones for the last four (4) years
- Reducing the demand side barrier and promoting improved reproductive health an Innovative approach to advancing reproductive health through faith-based organizations in pastoralist communities at Fafen zone of Somali Regional State (Demand Creation through religious leaders’ involvement SBCC DFID through EIFDDA).
- Global fund HIV/AIDS Care and support comprehensive program.

Funding Sources
EMDA receives funds for implementation of various projects from local and foreign funding organizations. Some of the Previous and current major donors include GF, PATH Finder, Population Council, FAO, Lucile Packard Foundation, NCA, Amref health Africa, JISRA Consortium through EIFDDA and CCRDA /Packard Foundation.
